Seydisfjordur hostel Hafaldan has been run by Thora Gudmundsdottir since 1975. Thora is born and raised in Seydisfjordur and lives in one half of the Harbour location. This makes the hostel more of a home than simply a sleeping bag accommodation.
Benedikta Guðrún Svavarsdottir came to work for Thora and Hafaldan hostel in spring 2012. They met in India in Thora´s Secret garden guesthouse the earlier winter. Benedikta had never been before to Seydisfjordur and like everyone else who comes there for one summer she is still there. Benedikta is a nurse and she can combine that with the hostess work in the hostel during summer time. She stays there this winter 2013 at the hospital location to welcome guests.
owner and founder
Thora Gudmundsdottir is born and raised in Seydisfjordur. Graduated as an architect from Denmark but came back home to Seydisfjordur when the ferry Norrona started sailing to the fjord to start a youth hostel. This was in the year 1975. She got a house by the harbour for the business and changed a former dormitory building for the women working in the herring into a travelers paradise. Thora has been a pioneer when it comes to protecting the old houses in the village. She wrote and got published a book about the history of the houses in Seydisfjordur. This plays an important role in the towns uniqueness and its millennium look. She also owns a guesthouse in Kerala, India where she lives during cold Icelandic winters
